Everything New Gym-Goers Should KnowDiana Smith
Summer is almost here and many of us are finally considering going to the gym. We all want to lose a few pounds and tighten up our bodies in order to proudly present them at the beach. However, looking good shouldn’t be the only reason to sign up for gym membership. Rather, we should exercise in order to work on our overall health. If you are new to the whole going to the gym thing, there are a few things you should consider first.
Location, location, location
The location is one of the major elements which will determine which gym you will join. Most of us don’t like commuting for any reason and it is obvious that people choose gyms which are closer to the place where they live or work. Research the local gym chains and see where each gym is situated. If you live on one end of the city and work on the other, then you should probably choose a gym closer to either one of those locations. Also, don’t forget to check the services each gym and location are offering and choose the gym according to your needs, even if you have to drive or cycle there.
Even though you are clean and take care of hygiene that doesn’t mean that everyone does the same. Before joining a certain gym, you should keep an eye out for their cleanliness. Have a peak in the change rooms and see how people behave and how clean the floors, toilets and showers are. Also, look at the machines and other equipment. Does it seem these are well maintained and cleaned? Are there any “out of order” signs? You don’t want to be stuck in a conversation with a naked guy every day or use sweaty equipment. It is a fact that everybody sweats, but there should be some products for sanitation provided so you could wipe clean the shared equipment.
If you are new, then you should know the essential gear you should have in the gym. It includes clean shoes, a towel and of course clothes. However, you will need some additional things to make your exercises more enjoyable. Besides being clean, shoes should be comfortable and made for sports. You don’t want to suffer any cramps or injuries to your ligaments. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during your workout and pack a few toiletries for after the workout. Most gyms don’t provide toiletries, so pack a small shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and flip flops for the shower and sauna. As far as clothes are concerned, you should wear something comfortable. However, gym wear specifically designed for exercising can help you feel better and be more motivated to work out and achieve your goals.
Ask for help
Since this is your first time going to the gym, you probably don’t know how each piece of equipment works. There is so much amazing equipment and many people actually ignore it because they don’t know how it works and they don’t want to get hurt. If you spot an interesting machine and you want to try it out, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even if it’s a simple treadmill, you should ask someone to help you start and control it. Don’t miss out on all the possibilities that a gym offers just because you are too shy to ask. More importantly, don’t get yourself hurt because you thought you knew how certain equipment works.
No matter what your reasons are, joining a gym is always a good idea. However, there are some precautions and tips for all new gym-goers, so make sure you follow the rules, and you will achieve your goals in no time.
